1 woman dead, 3 people hospitalized after an explosive crash in Deerfield Beach, BSO officials say
Broward Sheriff's deputies are investigating a fatal crash involving multiple vehicles in Deerfield Beach on Tuesday afternoon.
The Broward Sheriff's Office said they received a call at around 1:45 p.m. about a reported crash involving three vehicles near the 4400 block of Northeast 3rd Avenue in Deerfield Beach.
Investigators pronounced one person dead on the scene. Three other people were taken to a nearby hospital for treatment. According to BSO Fire, the person pronounced dead was an adult woman.
Chopper 4 was on the scene where a white car was flipped over and completely mangled. A white van was also mangled close by. A red car was also seen smashed into a home around the block from where the two other cars were hit.
Neighbors say this crash was one of the worst crashes they've ever seen.
Carlos Matute says he has lived in his home on the corner of NE Third Ave. and NE 44th St. for nine years, and he says accidents often happen at this four-way stop.
"A lot of people drive crazy here. They run at speeds like 100 to 120 mph here. They drive like crazy," Matute said.
When Matute got home from work around 5 p.m. Tuesday, he found his gate destroyed after a three-car crash had happened outside his house.
A mangled white car had smashed into his fence, just feet from his pool.
"I was worried because I have a granddaughter here who swims in the pool. I was scared," Matute said.
CBS News Miami spoke to one neighbor off camera who said that he pulled one of the victims out of the white mangled car. He also said he tried to help a woman in the car but she was already deceased.
Other neighbors recall hearing a loud boom noise outside of their homes. They added it sounded as if there was an explosion.
"It sounded like somebody hit a brick wall. It was just the loudest boom. And then the next thing you know, the sirens and everything came, but it was kind of scary," said Kim Smith, who lives nearby.
Neighbors say a stop sign in the median was taken out in the crash, and they want the city to do something about this dangerous intersection.
"I think they need to put a light in there or they need to put something in the road," Matute said.
The conditions of those in the hospital and the cause of the crash were still unknown Tuesday night.
