Betty Crocker, the trademark brand of General Mills, has managed to remain relevant ever since its creation in 1921 and is a mainstay in homes all across the country. This year, the brand is celebrating its 90th anniversary by releasing a new edition of its famous "Big Red" cookbook -- just in time for the holidays. With more than 65 million copies sold since its first edition hit book stores in 1950, the latest cookbook features old favorites (like a recipe for a green bean casserole), as well as 1,500 new recipes.

CBS News' Karina Mitchell recently caught up with Kristen Olson, a food consultant at Betty Crocker, to ask her about some of the hottest trends in food that we can expect to see in the coming year, and also how the brand to has managed to stay relevant over the decades.

KM: Betty Crocker is celebrating her 90th birthday this month. What do you think accounts for the brand's success and longevity?

KO: Betty Crocker has always been focused on making things easier in the kitchen. The brand remains determined to cater to predominantly modern day women who are looking for quick, healthy meal preparation options for their families. We look for recipes that incorporate fresh, healthy ingredients that are readily on hand. We also look for meals that require very little prep time and can feed a family.

KM: How has the brand evolved to keep up with current tastes and budgets?

KO: We have seen a definite shift towards more health conscious meals, that incorporate fresh produce. People want to eat healthy.

Kristin points out there has also been a tremendous shift in eating habits, with more people choosing to eat in rather than dine out - a trend expected to continue into the new year. She also says more men are making their way into the kitchen to prepare meals, either for themselves or for their families. We asked her for her top holiday trend picks that will get the party started.

1. Double Desserts

Pie meets cookie in one of the biggest trends of the season. Taking two desserts and mixing and mashing them together is one of Betty Crocker's favorite dessert ideas. Things like pie shakes, stuffed cookies and pie-filled cupcakes deliver a whole new, added layer of flavor and are guaranteed to be the star of the party.

2. Boozy Baking

From alcohol-infused cakes to cocktail pies, bakers everywhere are bringing the bar into the kitchen. A little tequila or some scotch whiskey adds a serious shot of fun and flavor for the over 21 crowd. We love these two recipes for cupcakes, which are guaranteed to keep you in good spirits. Kristin says the infusion of champagne into a cake batter helps keep cupcakes light and airy, while a bit of bourbon and hit of coffee liqueur - together with some vanilla vodka-infused frosting - will prove to be the ultimate holiday treat (for adults only!).

Lemon Champagne Celebration Cupcakes

This elegant champagne cupcake has a twist of lemon in the filling and glaze.

Cupcakes

  • 1 box Betty Crocker SuperMoist yellow cake mix
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1/2 cup champagne
  • 1/2 cup vegetable oil
  • 3 eggs
  • 2 teaspoons grated lemon peel

Filling

  • 2/3 cup lemon curd (from 10 oz jar)
  • 3 tablespoons sour cream

Icing

  • 2 cups powdered sugar
  • 2 tablespoons butter, melted
  • 1/4 cup fresh lemon juice

Heat oven to 350 F. (325 F for dark or nonstick pans). Line 15x10x1-inch pan with foil. Spray with cooking spray.

Make cake batter as directed on box, using cake mix, water, 1/2 cup champagne, oil and eggs. Stir 2 teaspoons grated lemon peel into batter. Pour into pan.

Bake 17 to 23 minutes or until toothpick inserted in center comes out clean. Do not remove cake from pan. Cool completely, about 30 minutes. Place cake in freezer. Freeze until firm, about 1 hour.

In medium bowl, add lemon curd and sour cream, mix until well blended. Set aside.

In medium bowl, add powdered sugar, melted butter and lemon juice; mix until well blended. Set aside.

To assemble cupcakes, remove cake from freezer, using foil, lift cake from pan. Using 2 1/4-inch round biscuit cutter, cut 24 rounds from the cake. Place 12 rounds top side down. Spread each with about 1 tablespoon lemon curd filling. Top with remaining cake rounds, top side up. Spoon 1 tablespoons icing over each cake, allowing icing to run down sides of cake.

To serve, place each cake in decorative cupcake liner and garnish.

Makes 12 cupcake cakes

3. From Cave to Kitchen

Forget the man cave. Today, guys are in the kitchen making (or at least appreciating) really good food.

Beer and Bacon Mancakes

Nothing says manly-man food like a meal made of beer, bacon and pancakes. Stir candied bacon and your favorite beer into Bisquick to make these larger-than-life mancakes.

Prep Time: 55 minutes

Start to Finish: 1 hour 10 minutes

  • 1/2 lb bacon (8 slices)
  • 1/3 cup packed brown sugar
  • 2 cups Original Bisquick mix
  • 1 cup of your favorite regular or nonalcoholic beer
  • 2 eggs

1. Heat oven to 350 degrees F. Line cookie sheet with foil. Place wire rack on top of cookie sheet. Arrange bacon in single layer on top of rack. Bake 10 minutes.

2. Sprinkle bacon with half the brown sugar. Bake 10 minutes longer. Turn bacon over; sprinkle with remaining brown sugar. Bake 10 to 15 minutes longer or until golden brown. Remove from rack. Cool completely, about 15 minutes. Crumble bacon into small pieces; set aside.

3. Heat griddle or skillet over medium-high heat or electric griddle to 375 degrees F; grease with vegetable oil or shortening.

4. In medium bowl, beat Bisquick mix, beer and eggs with whisk until blended. If batter is too thick, add additional beer until desired consistency. Stir in bacon. Pour by 1/2 cupfuls onto hot griddle. Cook until edges are dry. Turn; cook until golden brown.
