SANTA MONICA (CBS) - A young man was shot several times on a Santa Monica street and underwent surgery, authorities reported.

The shooting occurred at 3:30 p.m. near Sixth Street and Pacific Avenue, Sgt. Richard Lewis of the Santa Monica Police Department said.

More than one gunman, described only as in their 20s, got out of a dark-colored Kia Sorento-type sport utility vehicle and shot the victim in the upper body. The suspects' car reportedly had a bicycle or ski rack.

The victim, who appeared to be in his early 20s, was transported to a local hospital where he underwent surgery. Authorities did not know his condition.

Investigators were trying to track down the gunmen and asked the public for any information that could aid their search.
