Wandering bear in Altadena climbs into trees, runs through neighborhood

A wandering black bear has made its way through an Altadena neighborhood, climbing trees and running into residents' yards on Sunday.

The bear drew crowds of people to the 2300 block of Glenrose Avenue when it climbed up a tree around 9 a.m. Some were worried about what would happen when it finally decided to come down.

Around 8:15 p.m., the bear finally climbed down one tree before running through the neighborhood, and by 9:20 p.m., it had made its way up another tree.

"What I saw was I looked through the window of my room, and then that's why I just saw the bear," said Yahir Camacho, an Altadena resident.

Ricardo Valdez, another resident, said he's mainly concerned for his dog and children.

We're gonna keep her inside of my room, and, well, there are small children in the house and stuff like that, so I'm concerned for them," he said.

Neighbors said they saw the bear perched in the tree, turning their quiet street into an unexpected attraction. Dozens of people stopped to snap photos and watch the bear's every move.

One man even left raw chicken in a pan with a bowl of water on the sidewalk for the bear. But experts say that's exactly what not to do.

Feeding bears can make them used to people and that can put both the bear and the community in danger.

A Pasadena Humane Animal Control officer showed up around 7 p.m., asking people to clear the area and stop agitating the bear. The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department also responded to the scene, establishing a perimeter and helping with crowd control.

Wildlife officials urge people to keep their distance and not approach the animal.
