After Nearly 50 Years UCLA's Scates To Retire As Volleyball Coach

LOS ANGELES (AP) -- Al Scates, whose nearly 50-year men's volleyball coaching career at UCLA includes a Division I record of more than 1,200 victories, will retire in June 2012.

The school announced Scates' decision on Tuesday.

Scates has won 19 NCAA championships, 21 national titles and 24 conference titles during his tenure at UCLA. He's the only coach to lead three teams to undefeated records, in 1979, '82 and '84. He led the Bruins to 46 straight winning seasons from 1963-2008.
Scates is a member of the volleyball hall of fame in Holyoke, Mass.

He says he's enjoyed every minute of his career.
