Suspected Child Molester Dead After Standoff With Police In Riverside
RIVERSIDE (CBS) — A suspected child molester is dead following a standoff with police in Riverside.
Police say gunfire erupted at the Tyler Springs Senior Apartments in the 10400 block of Indiana Avenue Wednesday morning between police and an armed suspect barricaded inside his home.
Riverside Police detectives with the Sexual Assault and Child Abuse Unit at the residence to serve a search warrant involving allegations of child molestation when the suspect greeted authorities at his front door with a shotgun around 7:30 a.m.
The SWAT team was called in around 9:30. When they went into the home, they found the male suspect in his 60s dead with multiple gunshot wounds.
It is unknown if the suspect died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound or by police fire.
"I don't know if he fired his weapon, we are still early on in the investigation. But officers from the Riverside Police Department did fire their weapons," Lt. Guy Toussaint said.
The suspect's name was not released.
An officer injured his leg when he was trying to find cover during the incident, but he was not shot.
