Small explosion at Silver Lake house leaves multiple Los Angeles firefighters injured
Four Los Angeles City Fire Department firefighters were injured while responding to a freon leak and small explosion at a home in Silver Lake on Wednesday morning.
According to LAFD, crews responded to a residence in the 2600 block of Lakewood Avenue after an HVAC company reported a freon leak.
LAFD Battalion Chief Nick Pellegrini said crews went to the basement of the home when an explosion occurred. "(It was) a small explosion, but major enough to cause some injuries to four of our members."
Crews quickly extinguished the fire from the explosion, according to LAFD, and four LAFD members were injured. Their injuries range from a concussion-type injury to inhalation and some minor burns.
Two civilians, the homeowner and HV/AC technician, were treated on scene but refused transport, Pellegrini said
"A total of three patients have been transported with anticipation of one additional patient transport," LAFD said in a statement.
Arson investigators responded to the site. "Whenever we have a significant incident, we have injuries to our members, we bring arson out just to do a thorough investigation and to gather the facts of the situation," Pellegrini said
Freon is a trademark name used to refer to several different refrigerants, commonly used in air conditioning.
