Rock Climber Killed In Accident At Tahquitz Peak's Lily Rock

RIVERSIDE (CBSLA.com) — A rock climber was killed this weekend as the result of an accident at Tahquitz Peak in Idyllwild, which had left him dangling on a rope.

Bryan Rockwood, 49, of San Diego, was reportedly harnessed while scaling the one half-mile northern face of Lily Rock at the peak Saturday in Humber Park.

Firefighters were told by witnesses that rocks had tumbled from the rock formation, and that they saw Rockwood hanging from a rope, apparently unconscious, according to Cal Fire Capt. Miliford Ferguson.

Firefighters were dispatched at 11:07 a.m. to the scene in response to a hiker down call. Members of the mountain rescue team were ultimately called to reach Rockwood.

Rockwood was pronounced dead at the scene, according to fire authorities.

It was not immediately known how far down on the rope Rockwood dangled.

Lily Rock is a heavily-visited location among rock-climbers.
