1 dead, 1 hospitalized after crash with deputy in Riverside County
One person was killed and another was hospitalized on Saturday after a crash involving a Riverside County Sheriff's Department vehicle in the Calimesa area.
It happened a little after 10 a.m. near the intersection of Cherry Valley Boulevard and Roberts Street, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The RSO patrol car was being driven by a 41-year-old male deputy from the Cabazon Station, while the other vehicle, a 2018 Tesla Model 3, was being driven by 21-year-old Cherry Valley resident Gavin Hinkey.
Investigators say that the deputy was heading to a call for service with lights and sirens activated while heading west on Cherry Valley Boulevard near Roberts Street, where the Tesla was stopped.
"The crash occurred when, for reasons still under investigation, the Tesla Model 3 made a left turn onto Cherry Boulevard and was broadsided by the Ford Explorer Patrol Vehicle," the CHP release said.
Hinkey was declared dead at the scene, according to officers. His passenger, 20-year-old Madeline Fox of Cherry Valley, was taken to a nearby hospital with major injuries.
Officers said that the deputy was not wearing a seatbelt when the crash occurred, and that he was hospitalized with minor injuries.
"At this time, alcohol or drugs do not appear to have played a factor in the crash," CHP officers said.
