Person Impersonating Gas Utility Worker Sought

LONG BEACH (CBS) — Police are warning Long Beach residents to beware of a person who has been impersonating a gas utility employee to gain access to local homes.

Two separate incidents were reported Friday where people tried unsuccessfully to enter homes after identifying themselves as employees of Long Beach Gas and Oil, according to Long Beach police.

Long Beach Councilwoman Gerri Schipske and other city officials are now telling residents to "be careful who you let into your home."

A statement from the Long Beach Police Department reminds residents that all city employees should have identification with them at all times and must present it upon request.

"Additionally, residents should never hesitate to ask for proof of identification from any service provider before allowing them access into their home or business," the LBPD statement said. "If residents aren't convinced that the employee is a legitimate representative of the company, they should contact the company directly for verification."

The police statement said residents should also call 911 to report any suspicious activity involving purported service workers.
