Man Sentenced To Potential Life Sentence For Shooting 3 At Granada Hills Church Carnival
SAN FERNANDO (CBS) — A North Hollywood man was sentenced Monday to a potential life prison term for shooting his ex-girlfriend and two others at a church carnival in Granada Hills three years ago tomorrow.
Fernando Diaz, 36, will not be eligible for a parole hearing until he is 98 years old under the sentence imposed by San Fernando Superior Court Judge Shari Silver, according to Deputy District Attorney Ruby Arias.
Diaz was subdued by five people -- including an off-duty Burbank police officer -- after going to a carnival at St. John Baptist de la Salle Catholic Church on May 17, 2008, and opening fire on his ex-girlfriend, with whom he was involved in a custody battle.
Diaz's ex-girlfriend was shot in the elbow and two other people were also struck by the gunfire.
He was convicted in March of two counts each of attempted murder and assault with a firearm and one count of being a felon with a firearm. Jurors acquitted him of a third count of attempted murder.
