Los Angeles police officer hits, kills woman while driving to call at Halloween party

An officer with the Los Angeles Police Department hit and killed a woman while responding to a call at a Halloween party in the San Fernando Valley on Saturday night, authorities confirmed.

According to the LAPD, the incident was reported in the area of Woodman Avenue and Bessemer Street in Sherman Oaks at about 10:30 p.m. Officers were responding to reports of a fight among a large group of people when an officer collided with a pedestrian near the party, which police said had nearly 300 people.

The pedestrian, identified only as a 32-year-old woman, was pronounced dead at the scene. Her name is yet to be released, but family members tell CBS LA that she leaves behind two young daughters.

The crash happened about a mile from the party, on Woodman Avenue between Bessemer Street and Erwin Street. It's unclear if she was in the street or a crosswalk.

A witness described the crash to CBS LA.

"What I heard was a loud thud; it caught my attention because it wasn't loud enough to be a gunshot, but it didn't sound like a car accident," the witness said. "I see one cop car in the middle of the street, sideways, and then I see a cop a couple feet from the curb, looking into the street. ... You could see the body in the middle of the street on the floor."

Video from the scene shows wet road conditions due to the rainstorm that moved through Southern California on Halloween.

No additional details were immediately made available.
