Lake Elsinore man arrested for 2007 shooting that killed 15-year-old boy in Moreno Valley
Authorities have made an arrest in a nearly 20-year-old cold case in the Inland Empire.
The original incident happened back on May 5, 2007, when deputies were dispatched to a dirt field in the 23000 block of Sunnymead Boulevard in Moreno Valley after receiving reports of shots fired in the area, according to a press release from the Riverside County Sheriff's Department.
Upon arrival, they found Clayvaughn Mallet, a 15-year-old boy, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. He died after being taken to a nearby hospital.
Initially Central Homicide Unit detectives assumed the investigation, but the case went cold after several years and no arrests were made.
In 2024, investigators began to review cold case homicides, including the 2007 incident. They were able to identify new evidence while doing so, leading to the reopening of the case.
"Investigators identified Vincent Gonzales, a now 37-year-old male from Lake Elsinore, as the suspect in the murder," RSO's release said.
Gonzales was arrested on Friday last week and booked for murder.
As the investigation remains ongoing, detectives have not provided further information.
Anyone who knows more is urged to contact RSO's Central Homicide Unit at (951) 955-2777.
