Alleged DUI driver arrested for crash that killed one, hospitalized two others in Costa Mesa

Police arrested an alleged DUI driver following a deadly crash in Costa Mesa that happened early Sunday morning. 

They were in pursuit of a stolen vehicle suspect at around 3 a.m., following the driver into Costa Mesa where they were driving at high speeds, according to the Costa Mesa Police Department. 

While the chase continued, the driver crashed into a power pole at the intersection of Santa Ana Avenue and 22nd Street, killing one passenger and injuring another. 

Police say that the front-seat passenger was pronounced dead at the scene. They have not yet been identified. 

The driver, since identified as 20-year-old Carson man Anthony Samayoa, and a back-seat passenger were both taken to a nearby hospital for treatment on injuries sustained in the crash. Their conditions were not immediately noted by police. 

Samayoa was arrested on suspicion of vehicular homicide, felony DUI, felony evasion and attempted vehicle theft, police said.
