MALIBU (AP) — An abandoned car was found crashed in the surf at a Malibu beach and the driver was eventually located at a nearby hospital.

Los Angeles County Sheriff's officials say a work crew came across the damaged car on Dan Blocker State Beach just after dawn Saturday. It appeared to have careered some 30 feet off a cliff from the Pacific Coast Highway.

Deputies later found the driver, a 51-year-old Bellflower man, undergoing tests at a hospital. Investigators say he appeared to be under the influence of alcohol.

The extent of his injuries was not released.

The incident remains under investigation.
