Alcohol, Firearms Found Inside SUV Involved In Deadly Crash

By Greg Mills

FONTANA (CBS) — Authorities Monday investigated the possibility that alcohol may have played a role in a deadly collision in Fontana that left four people dead and one person injured.

The accident took place at 9:35 p.m. Sunday when a Chevy Suburban SUV heading eastbound on Baseline Avenue struck a Nissan sedan traveling southbound on Cherry Avenue.

Efrain Leon, who was driving the Suburban, ran a red light, according to Fontana Police.

The SUV slammed into the Honda with a boy and his mother inside, who were traveling on Cherry Avenue, police said. They went on to hit a third vehicle before crashing into a telephone pole.

"We're looking into the possibility that alcohol was involved. There was some evidence at the scene, which indicated that alcohol may have been a factor," said Fontana Police Sergeant Billy Green.

Green said alcoholic beverages were found both inside and outside the Suburban. Police also found firearms inside the vehicle.

Whether or not Efrain Leon had been drinking would not be known until after toxicology reports results were returned, authorities said.

Efrain and his two brothers, who were passengers, were all killed. Efrain and his brother Ernesto were killed upon impact, authorities said.

"There was one person from the Suburban, who was ejected,"Green said, referring to Gilbert Leon, who was transported to an area hospital where he died.

None of the brothers where wearing seat belts, police said.

Noah Ferrer, 11, who was a passenger in the Nissan, died at the scene. His mother spent the night in the hospital and was released Monday.

Southern California Edison workers replaced the power pole and Baseline Avenue was reopened by mid afternoon Monday.
