38-year-old man crossing Lancaster street struck and killed by hit-and-run driver
Authorities are searching for the hit-and-run driver who struck and killed a 38-year-old man as he was crossing the street in Lancaster on Monday.
They were dispatched to the intersection of Avenue J and Hanstead Avenue at around 11:40 p.m. after learning of the crash, according to a release from the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department.
They arrived and found the victim in the street.
Preliminary investigation revealed that the victim, since identified as Gilbert Amaro by the Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner, was walking northbound across Avenue J outside of a crosswalk when a sedan heading westbound on the same road struck him.
Instead of stopping to help, the driver fled the scene.
A second vehicle, a Toyota Camry, also heading westbound struck Amaro was he was in the road. That driver stopped and attempted to help the victim before cooperating with the ongoing investigation.
Amaro was declared dead at the scene by Los Angeles County Fire Department paramedics.
Investigators have not released details on the first vehicle that struck Amaro or its driver. Anyone who knows more is asked to contact LASD's Lancaster Station at (661) 948-8466.
