Teen arrested in shooting at Mall of Louisiana, police say; at least 1 killed, 5 injured

What to know about the shooting at the Mall of Louisiana

  • At least one person was killed and five others were injured in a shooting at the Mall of Louisiana in Baton Rouge on Thursday, Baton Rouge Police Chief Thomas Morse Jr. said. An area high school identified the person who was killed as senior Martha Odom. 
  • Markel Lee, 17, was arrested and faces a first-degree murder charge, five counts of attempted murder and one count of illegal use of a weapon, police said Friday. Law enforcement also asked for the public's help to help identify another individual they believe is connected to the shooting. 
  • The shooting appears to have occurred after two groups of people got into an argument in the food court, police said.
 

Police arrest 17-year-old in shooting at Mall of Louisiana

Baton Rouge Police Chief Thomas Morse Jr. said police arrested a teen Friday in the shooting at the Mall of Louisiana that killed one and injured five. 

Markel Lee, 17, turned himself in to local authorities earlier in the day, Morse said at a news conference. Detectives worked "through the night" to execute an arrest warrant, he said. Lee faces a first-degree murder charge, five counts of attempted murder and one count of illegal use of a weapon, police said. 

He is currently being held at East Baton Rouge Parish Prison, police said.  

Law enforcement asked for the public's help in a social media post to help identify an individual they believe is connected to the shooting.

Ascension Episcopal School identifies shooting victim

Ascension Episcopal School identified the person who was killed in the shooting as senior Martha Odom. 

Two other students are healing after being injured in the off-campus incident, the school said on social media

The school described Odom as "a joyful presence whose kindness and infectious enthusiasm brought light to all who knew her." No further details were shared about Odom or the other injured students. The school previously said three of the victims were seniors. 

The school thanked the public for its support and asked for prayers "for healing, for peace, and for the strength to carry one another forward." 

"Ascension Episcopal School carries this cross together— we are holding one another close with an immense amount of faith and love," the school wrote.

3 victims are seniors at Ascension Episcopal School in Lafayette, mayor says

Lafayette Mayor Monique Blanco Boulet said three of the victims of the shooting are seniors from Ascension Episcopal School, a private school located in Lafayette.

Boulet did not provide further information on the victims or their injuries.

Lafayette is located about 50 miles away from Baton Rouge.

At least 1 killed and 5 injured, police say; 5 in custody

At least one of the people who were shot has died and five people are now in custody, Baton Rouge Police Chief Thomas Morse Jr. said Thursday evening. The person who was killed was not immediately identified. 

He also clarified that five others had been injured, after previously saying there had been 10 total victims. One person was in surgery, and three others had minor injuries, Morse said. The other person had "very minor" injuries, he said.

Morse said authorities are still looking for more people who may have been involved. He did not provide any further information on those in custody or what charges they may be facing.

Baton Rouge mayor: "We're gonna catch you"

"We're gonna catch you," Baton Rouge Mayor Sid Edwards said, addressing those responsible for the shooting.

"We're not gonna have this in Baton Rouge. It's not gonna happen," he said. "I have complete confidence in our law enforcement partners that we're gonna go out and grab these guys and get them off the street."

Police: At least 10 injured, no longer an active shooter incident

Police said this is no longer an active shooter incident.

The shooting appears to have occurred after two groups of people got into an argument in the mall's food court. Several bystanders who were not involved may have been shot, Baton Rouge Police Chief Thomas Morse Jr. said.

Ten people were taken to local hospitals, Morse said. He did not provide details on their injuries, although CBS affiliate WAFB-TV reported at least two people were critically injured. Police confirmed that several of the victims were in surgery.

FBI responding to scene

The FBI's New Orleans field office said in a statement it was "aware of and is responding to an incident at the Mall of Louisiana with our partners. At this time, that is all the information we can provide."
