Worker Killed At New 49ers Stadium Construction Site

SANTA CLARA (CBS) - A construction worker has been killed at the site of the new 49ers stadium in Santa Clara, according to police.

The accident was reported at 6:45 a.m. at the construction site at Tasman Drive and Centennial Boulevard.

Santa Clara city spokesman Dan Beerman said it appears the person was working in the bottom of an elevator shaft when another worker "took a car down the shaft" and inadvertently crushed the victim.

Beerman said word of the death has sent a shock wave through the city.

"Everybody's walking around here in a daze," he said.

He said the victim is an employee of a subcontractor for Turner-Devcon, the stadium project's general contractor.

"It's a shame because we've had 1,000 people a day working on that site for well over a year now and we've had very minimal accidents, and to have this is just devastating for everybody," he said.

Construction workers wearing hard hats and vests were seen leaving the facility, known as Levi's Stadium.

A briefing was expected by the contractor later Tuesday morning.
