A Producer's Windy City Experience
Hello Good Day Sacramento viewers, I'm back from the Windy City!! I know most the time I blog about my local jaunts, but Chicago stands out on my list of vacation destinations! We all know about the luxury shopping along the Magnificent Mile and the birds-eye views from the Sears Tower, but I wanted something different when I was planning this trip…something off the beaten path…something new. And Hotel Lincoln was that something new!
Located in Lincoln Park on Chicago's North Side, Hotel Lincoln is situated far enough away from the noisy, tourist-filled streets to make travelers feel like they are discovering a hidden gem. The bustling street noise is replaced by the sound of live music at the local farmers market. The tourist-saturated streets are replaced by wide open green spaces in the city's expansive Lincoln Park (which is by the way only a block from the hotel and visible from almost every window in the building). The Hard Rock Café and Cheesecake Factory are replaced by mom and pop shops that boast local fare.
My first impression upon stepping inside Hotel Lincoln is that this place offers the best of both worlds -- the comfort and class of a four or five-star hotel combined with the understated flash and pizzazz of a social hotspot. It's quirky but cool, exuding that retro 1950's vibe. The hotel makes guests feel like they traveled back in time or stepped onto the set of "Mad Men" but still offers the top-notch amenities of the 21st century. Although my room was quite inviting with its cloud-like bed and picturesque views of Lincoln Park and Lake Michigan, I decided to first unwind with a couple drinks at the rooftop bar. Along with killer signature cocktails, J. Parker serves up some of the most sensational views of Chicago as well! I quickly came to the conclusion that the only proper way to take in those unobstructed views of the lake was with a classic dirty martini in true Hotel Lincoln fashion!
After three martinis and a long plane ride, my room (and my bed) seemed more enticing than ordering a fourth drink. I walked back to my room and slid between my sheets. The bed was more than comfortable, it was soothing. The usual sounds that accompany a bustling metropolis were drowned out by the sounds of my own faint breath. It was so quiet I almost forgot I was in one of the largest cities in the world! During my short stay, I managed to take full advantage of every treat that Hotel Lincoln offered, including a meal at their heavily-touted restaurant. Perennial Virant prides itself on using fresh, locally-sourced ingredients and is sustainable is every sense of the word. They not only contribute compost to green city markets, they also preserve vegetables at the end of every season to use in the future. Brilliant! And the food is also something to write home about. My pork chop with fermented black bean puree and pickled tomatillo salsa verde was finger-lickin' good! And for those feeling more adventurous, kick off your meal with the fried perch or foie gras mousse. You won't be disappointed!
All in all, Hotel Lincoln was exceptional and I urge all of you to do yourself a favor and experience it yourselves next time you're in the Windy City!
