Hello loyal Good Day viewers! It's been too long since my last posting and I've been itching to get away! One surefire way to escape the monotonous "Ground Hog Day" grind of a 9-5 is a weekend away in one of the most vibrant cities in the world -- Chicago! Since my last jaunt to the Windy City, I have been longing to get back for a much-needed shot of adrenaline. This time around I opted to stay at Hotel Palomar simply because it's a Kimpton (you can never go wrong with a Kimpton) and also because of its central location. Just a few blocks from the luxury shops and world-class restaurants dotting the Magnificent Mile, this boutique hotel is literally in the middle of everything.
My first impression upon stepping inside Hotel Palomar was that it offered the best of both worlds -- the comfort and class of a four or five-star hotel combined with the understated flash and pizzazz of a social hotspot. From the sleek marble checkerboard tile lining the entrance to the invigorating and inspiring artwork lining the lobby walls, the design exudes both whimsy and luxury. The tasteful design also carries over the rooms that are eclectic and unique without being too over-the-top. I was pleasantly surprised when I walked through the door to find the usual creature comforts I've come to expect with Kimpton. While cozy, the layout of the standard room doesn't make you feel cramped. The decor is colorful and exuberant, giving the small space a big personality. My favorite feature though has to be the bed which looks more like a giant cloud than a mattress.
From check-in to check-out, I felt like a true VIP. The Hotel Palomar staff was attentive and accommodating, making me feel like the most important person in the entire hotel. The VIP treatment carried over to the restaurant as well! I am not exaggerating when I say this was one of the best meals I've ever experienced, hands down. Sable Kitchen & Bar is described as a New American gastro-lounge that local and traveling foodies love and Food & Wine magazine named one of Chicago's Best New Bars. The buzz around Sable is hypnotic and (in this humble food lover's opinion) it lived up to its reputation with a cherry on top. I sat down with an open mind and let Executive Chef Lawrence Letrero take it from there. I started with the ceviche which was like a succulent seafood party in my mouth! We then splurged on the pretzel bites with cheddar beer sauce and the corn risotto because nothing screams the Midwest like carbs. But the highlight of the meal was the Lamb Pops with cumin glaze and harissa. I've never tasted anything like this! Cooked to perfection and dripping with meaty goodness, if I can recommend one thing on this menu it's this dish! I am not typically a lamb fan but Chef Letrero turned me! As if the food wasn't enough, we were treated to an expert wine pairing which just accentuated the entire experience. I have nothing but wonderful things to say about Sable Kitchen & Bar and encourage everyone (even if you aren't a guest of Hotel Palomar) to make a trip to this hot, hip River North restaurant.
From the hotel to the restaurant, Hotel Palomar is a one-stop-shop for those looking to unwind, relax and indulge. Please do yourself a favor and book a trip to Chicago, not for the shopping, sights or sports, but to experience Hotel Palomar yourself. They do it right and leave you with a story and experience you are dying to share with others.
