The Five Best Skateboard Shops in Dallas

Dallas might be better known for basketball and football, but skateboarding is worming its way into the hearts of area action lovers. Independent skate shops hold their own in the Big D, from grip tape, to boards to trucks, these shops will have you kick-flipping by the weekend.

Independently owned and operated, Rec Shop prides itself in not being a chain skate shop. Since 2004, Rec Shop has served the DFW area on its terms. Rec Shop carries major brands, long boards and old school boards that are harder to find. It strives to promote local talent with photos of anyone's sick tricks, so ollie over to Rec Shop for a taste of good grassroots skate culture.

Index Skate Supply brandishes its stash of decks from DGK, Expedition, Organika and other big name boards with shoes to match from Adidas, Converse, Nike and Vans. Top it off with a skate hat and hit the streets in style without a skinny wallet.

Vertigo Skate Shop has three locations, at which skaters not only shop for shirts, hoodies, shoes, watches, socks and hats, to compliment their new decks, trucks and wheels, but also to try out the in-store half-pipe. Vertigo offers newbies private lessons as well. Stocked and restocked constantly, the variety at Vertigo is impressive. Wipe yourself out at the metroplex in Plano, the Village at Fairview in Fairview or at Town East Mall in Mesquite.

Break in your gear right away, meet other skaters and even participate in events like lock-ins and competitions right where you get your gear. The on-site skate shop at Eisenbergs offers all this on top of stellar sales on hoodies, hats, decks and wheels. This is the one skate shop in town that even sells ramps. In July of 1997, family of X Games gold medalist Arlo Eisenberg built a skate park that would embrace skate culture and provide a family friendly place to skate, shop and enjoy time with their families. With an on-site arcade and anything skaters new and seasoned could need, Eisenberg succeeded.

Boasting new management, new ramps and even a new shop, Alliance Skate Park is operated by the Grand Prairie Parks and recreation department. This $1.2-million outdoor facility has a full-functioning skate shop that pushes a variety of  skateboards, shoes and clothes from top-name skate brands. Stock up here and practice hard.
