Texas Ex-Marine Sentenced For Defrauding Charities

DALLAS (AP) — A former Marine has been sentenced to 4½ years in federal prison for conning charities out of thousands of dollars to feed his dream of playing on the pro golf tour.

Michael Duye Campbell had admitted to lying that he had suffered battle injuries to further the fraud.

A Justice Department statement says U.S. District Judge Jorge Solis in Dallas also ordered the 30-year-old Campbell on Wednesday to pay almost $41,000 in restitution.

Military records show he served in the Marine Corps from 2000 to 2004, but the records do not support his claim to have been a combat veteran who suffered a traumatic brain injury.

Campbell entered his plea on March 6. The Houston man could have been sentenced to up to 20 years in prison.
