FORT WORTH (CBSDFW.COM) - A swarm of bees stung eight people in a northeast Fort Worth neighborhood Sunday afternoon, officials said.

It happened at a house in the 3700 block of Galvez Avenue, Fort Worth Fire Department spokesman Richard Harrison said.

"There was probably like 100's of bees. I have never seen that many bees, it was like the cartoons when you see a swarm of bees," said victim Elizabeth Garcia.

One MedStar paramedic and a civilian who was stung more than 100 times were hospitalized, Harrison said. The elderly man, believed to be in his 70s, was completely covered in bees, witnesses said, and was in and out of consciousness. He was taken to John Peter Smith hospital in Fort Worth.

Four firefighters and the other two victims of the insect attack suffered only minor stings, despite wearing bunker gear for protection.

"They got in my hood and I didn't like that so I yanked it off," said rookie firefighter Fernando Hernandez. "I bolted down the street. Luckily, some neighbor was watering his garden and he sprayed me down with water so they left me alone."

A pest control worker came to the home later to remove the hive.

Three weeks ago a swarm of 30,000 bees attacked a woman in Pantego. She was stung 200 times but survived. Two of her horses however, died as a result of their multiple bee stings.

Authorities recommend people call professionals to remove beehives from their property to avoid similar incidents.
