2 Teachers, Exchange Student Among Victims Of Texas School Shooting
SANTA FE, Texas (CBSDFW.COM/AP) - Two teachers and a Pakistani exchange student were among the victims who died in a shooting at Santa Fe High School Friday.
Texas Gov. Greg Abbott confirmed 10 people were killed and 10 others were injured after a teenager opened fire inside the school that's about 35 miles southeast of Houston.
The suspect in the shooting, 17-year-old Dimitrios Pagourtzis, was arrested and charged with capital murder.
Substitute teacher Ann Perkins was among those who died. According to those who knew her, she was a beloved teacher and was well-loved in the community.
Family members say another substitute teacher whose passion was her children and grandchildren was also killed in the shooting.
Leia Olinde says authorities confirmed to her family that her aunt, Cynthia Tisdale, was killed in Friday morning's shooting.
She says Tisdale, who was in her 60s, was like a mother to her and helped her shop for wedding dresses last year.
Olinde says Tisdale was married to her husband for close to 40 years and had three children and eight grandchildren. She says she "never met a woman who loved her family so much."
Olinde's fiance, Eric Sanders, says "words don't explain her lust for life and the joy she got from helping people."
The Pakistani Embassy in Washington D.C. identified another victim as Sabika Sheikh, a Pakistani exchange student. "Our thoughts and prayers are with Sabika's family and friends," said Aizaz Ahmad Chaudry, Pakistan's ambassador to the United States.
Sheikh was an exchange student with YES, which is funded by the U.S. State Department. YES provides scholarships for secondary school school students from countries with significant Muslim populations to spend one academic year in the U.S., CBS News reports.
Another student who died was identified as 17-year-old Chris Stone.
