HALTOM CITY (CBSDFW.COM) - A sink hole developed in Haltom City on the service road near Highway 377 and Loop 820.

The hole is about the width of a single lane of traffic on the service road.

The westbound access road is currently closed from Highway 377 and the 820 exit ramp to Haltom Road is also closed.

The sink hole is a concern for Monday as parents get their children ready for the first day of school for Birdville ISD. The North Tarrant Express has a traffic control plan in place to reroute drivers.

From the NTE:

Please note that all lanes of the westbound I-820 frontage road from Denton Hwy 377 to Haltom Rd are closed due to a pavement issue. The off-ramp from westbound I-820 to Haltom Rd is also closed but will be reopened in the morning for the first day of school in BISD and specifically Haltom High School. All westbound traffic on the frontage road will be detoured at High Pointe for access to the high school or back to the frontage road via Haltom Rd.

One family's car was damaged as they were driving along the road. As a man, his wife and two-year-old daughter were traveling to a birthday party, he noticed the sink hole in the middle lane, but it was too late.

David Stapp swiped through pictures he took of the damage. His tire rim got bent when he and his family got stuck in the sink hole. He tried to veer out of the way, but his tire got jammed.

"Just the whole passenger side of the car caught the edge of the hole and it bottomed out and pushed the front passenger wheel and threw the tire in," explained Stapp.

A spokesperson for the NTE said a dip overnight turned into the sink hole. They said they won't know a cause until excavation equipment can clear the area on Monday so crews can take a look.
