LAKE WHITNEY (CBSDFW.COM) - A Thursday afternoon grass fire destroyed seven buildings and burned 300 acres in Hill County.

The fire started around 4:00 p.m Thursday near Lake Whitney.  What started as a grass fire quickly spread to nearby homes and threatened a power plant near the lake.

Hundreds of volunteer firefighters, many who have assisted with other fires across the region, helped fight the fire, which as of 10:00p.m. is listed as 80 percent contained.

Many residents are still being held to an evacuation order. A shelter for residents has been set up at Prairie Valley Church.

There were no reports of any injures to homeowners.  One female firefighter had to be treated for smoke inhalation.

As of 10:00 p.m. power remains out for the nearby town of Whitney.  School for Friday was cancelled by the Whitney ISD because of the power outage and fire.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
