Restaurant App Helping Feed Hungry In North Texas

COLLIN COUNTY (CBSDFW.COM) - The technology most North Texans can't seem to put down is now helping feed those in need. The charitable giving is thanks to the Plano-created Tango Tab app.

Elizabeth Cline-Reza saved $10 on her lunch Thursday at Patrizio's in Plano. While she kept more money in her pocket she also contributed to how much it will cost Scott McFadden to feed his family.

"I've used Groupon and Living Social and so this seems pretty comparable to that, but there's a great cause behind it," Cline-Reza said.

Tango Tab is a free online app that offers restaurant discounts and donates a portion of revenue to meal assistance organizations, like Minnie's Food Pantry in Plano -- the same place McFadden comes to feed his family.

"What they offer us is a great supplement to what we can't afford at home," McFadden said.

Officials with Tango Tab say it isn't difficult to make the non-profit contributions.

"Every time you redeem that offer we donate a meal to that person in need," Tango Tab Social Media Manager Nick Marino Jr. explained.

Tango Tab is one of the reasons that inventory is up at Minnie's Food Pantry. In September the non-profit offered free groceries to 920 out of work and low-income Collin County residents… a number up more than 100 from August.

As the weather gets colder and the holidays approach Minnie's expects the number of people seeking assistance to increase by about 30-percent.

With their current and expected clientele pantry workers are happy for the donations.

"It's helping us out a lot really," said Erica Simon, with Minnie's.

Volunteers say $1 goes a lot further at food pantries like Minnie's. So buying a single meal at a restaurant through the Tango Tab app could possibly feed one whole family.

More than 600 restaurants have signed up to pay for the promotion, which helps fill their seats while also filling the stomachs of those in need.
