Plano To Allow Dogs On Restaurant Patios

PLANO (CBSDFW.COM) - The Plano City Council voted unanimously on Tuesday night to allow dogs at outdoor restaurant patios. Those restaurants that choose to allow dogs will need to apply for a permit and adhere to health guidelines set by the city.

"I think the citizens of Plano -- and I know our customers -- would be delighted," said Buddy Cramer, owner of Katy Trail Ice House in Plano at Tuesday's council meeting. His restaurant led the push to change the city's pet restrictions.

Mayor Harry LaRosiliere and councilwoman Andre Davidson both said that they were reluctant to vote for the change. Both also said that they would not want to dine at a restaurant that allowed dogs. However, they agreed with the rest of the council that the decision on whether or not to allow dogs should be left up to the individual businesses.

"I think the owner has the right to decide what cliental he serves," said Davidson.

While the city said that it had received some comments from people against allowing dogs at restaurants, nobody at Tuesday's council meeting spoke in opposition.

Dallas, Houston and San Antonio all let restaurants decide if dogs are allowed on their outdoor patios. According to the City of Plano, out of more than 30,000 restaurants in those three Texas cities, less than 100 restaurants actually allow dogs. It is unclear how many restaurants in Plano are interested in permitting dogs.
