Opponents Organize Efforts Against Home Rule
DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) - Another public campaign on home rule gets underway Tuesday.
This time, opponents of the proposed plan for Dallas ISD schools starts its effort to squash home rule.
If Home Rule supporters can get their word out, this group wants voters to hear the other side if the argument.
While Dallas Mayor Mike Rawlings has taken on the role of promoter-in-chief in the Support Our Public Schools push to move Dallas ISD to an independent home rule charter school system, you could call Daniel Barerra, the mayor of the Anti-Home Rule effort.
"They haven't come out and sold people on why we need this Home Rule system. That creates a lot of uncertainty," said Barrera.
Barrera's connected with the "Our Community, Our Schools" campaign, a coalition of 20 community, minority and teacher advocacy groups pushing against a Home Rule plan for Dallas ISD. The newly formed group holds its first meeting Tuesday evening from 6 - 8 p.m. at the Dallas County Schools Technology Center, located at 5151 Samuel Blvd.
LULAC leader Hector Flores believes there is an agenda for Home Rule supporters.
"We think there is an effort, like in other places to try and privatize education, and we don't think that's the way to go," he said.
CBS 11 reached out to the Home Rule supporters for comment on the newly formed opposition effort.
