Mumps Spreading Through Suddenly Sick NHL
The NHL is facing an unusual outbreak of the mumps.
So far, about a dozen players on four teams have been diagnosed with the illness that usually strikes children.
It started in Anaheim and plagued the Ducks, who had three players affected. It then moved to the Minnesota Wild, who had five victims. Tanner Glass of the New York Rangers then came down with it, and the New Jersey Devils say two players also turned up sick.
The virus is very infectious and close quarters can lead to multiple victims. It can occasionally cause complications, but most victims recover quickly.
The NHL and the players' union have provided information to players on ways to protect themselves. Vaccination decisions are made by club medical staffs and players.
