Plano Football Coach Died From Heat-Related Issue

PLANO (CBSDFW.COM) - The Texas heat claimed the life of a football coach on the first day of practice. Prestonwood Christian Academy assistant football coach Wade McLain died Monday after passing out during an early evening drill. On Tuesday, the Collin County Medical Examiner ruled that the 55-year-old died from heat exposure associated with heart disease.

A multi-sport coach and teacher for Prestonwood Christian Academy for a decade, people who knew McLain said that he centered his life around helping young people.

Prestonwood Baptist Church's senior pastor, Jack Graham, said that McLain was very giving, and never met a stranger. "He never had a bad day. He was just that type of person, that was exuberant and passionate about life."

The high temperature on Monday was well into the triple digits, but school officials said that they took all of the necessary heat-related precautions for their student athletes, including extensive water breaks and air-conditioned cool-down periods.

The church is counseling friends and family members. McLain had five children, one of whom was on the football team. A visitation for McLain will take place on Wednesday from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the Restland Funeral Home Memorial Chapel. Funeral services will be held on Thursday at 2:00 p.m. at Prestonwood Baptist Church.
