Man Hit & Killed While Changing Tire On Toll Road

DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) - The Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) is investigating a believed hit and run accident that left a North Texas man dead.

The man, identified late Monday morning as Jason Jones of Duncanville, was found after 3 a.m. on the northbound on-ramp to the George Bush Turnpike, just off of Luna Road.

"Apparently he had a flat tire and he was changing the tire and it looks like somebody came along and struck him somehow during that process," explained DPS Trooper Lonnie Haschell.

Jones' body was discovered when workers with the North Texas Tollway Authority's Roadway Customer Service (RCS) stopped.

"They turned on their lights, went up to do their thing to help the motorist and they discovered the man laying on the pavement in front of the Jeep," said Haschell. "He was already deceased, died at the scene. He was a 26-year-old male from the metroplex."

The NTTA roadside assistance workers are on toll roads 24 hours a day providing free help with emergencies.

"They'll come by and help change a tire or keep traffic off of you while you're changing your tire. But that's what they're there for is to keep traffic moving and flowing safely," Haschell said.

The number for any type of roadside assistance on a tollway is (972) 444-HELP (4357). The number is also listed on all toll tags.

Investigators say there were no witnesses to the crash and there were few clues left by the hit and run driver.
