Longtime Texas Cartoonist Etta Hulme Dies
FORT WORTH, Texas (AP) - Etta Hulme, a onetime Walt Disney animator who went on to a 36-year career as editorial cartoonist for the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, has died at her Arlington home. She was 90.
Her daughter, Helen Hulme, says her mother died Wednesday after a number of years of declining health. A funeral is scheduled for Monday in Arlington.
Hulme drew the Star-Telegram editorial page cartoons from 1972 to her retirement in 2008 and was one of the few women ever hired as an editorial cartoonist for a metropolitan newspaper.
She was the daughter of a grocer and a schoolteacher in the small Brazos Valley town of Somerville. After graduating from the University of Texas, she worked briefly at the Disney studios before returning to Texas to raise four children with her husband.
