Light Fight: Flower Mound Homeowners Say Not In My Backyard
FLOWER MOUND (CBSDFW.COM) – Some Flower Mound homeowners say they don't want new Lewisville ISD athletic fields built near their properties, and several of them are expected to show up at a public meeting to voice their concerns.
While the district says it has reached out to the community for input on this project and received approval from several homeowners associations, at least 50 homeowners say they were left out.
The plans call for a new ninth grade campus for Flower Mound High School. To make room for the new campus, Lewisville ISD plans to tear down several of the high school's current athletic facilities and move them across the street. The new baseball field would back up very closely to Steffani McQueen's backyard.
"We don't want the lights and the noise," she says. "There will be a 70 foot light 25 feet from my property line."
McQueen isn't the only resident worried about the construction plans. Todd Smith says he moved to Flower Mound for the quiet suburban feel. He says the athletic fields will change the view from his deck dramatically.
"My whole back yard is going to be lit up like a Christmas tree back there," he says. "I believe my property value will go down if the lights and sound and baseball with softball and tennis are in my back yard."
Lewisville ISD says it is aware that everyone is not onboard with the plans.
"We've heard a lot of those concerns and we're looking at how we can meet and address some of those concerns they are bringing forward," says Lewisville spokesperson Tristen Wilson.
Some residents also say it is a waste of taxpayer money to tear down current athletic fields and then rebuild them right across the street.
