Glen Garden Residents Dispirited About Distillery Plan

FORT WORTH (CBSDFW.COM) - The controversial proposed redevelopment of the Glen Garden Country Club into a whiskey distillery isn't sitting well with many residents living nearby.

Jose Parga is one of them. He says he bought his home on a golf course for a reason. "It's really nice here -- quiet. I like quiet," said Parga, about his Southeast Fort Worth neighborhood.

Parga is one of many who say they don't like the idea of a local whiskey distillery buying the club and moving its operations there.

"The first thing is smell the second thing is traffic," says Parga.

The owners of the distillery promise an eco-friendly design with a visitor's center. They even gathered 1000 signatures on a petition supporting it.

But opponents have gathered 3000 signatures from homeowners concerned about possible traffic, fumes and a fungus called whiskey mold that can sometimes coat buildings around a distillery.

"Clearly just the possibility of that, to me, questions the viability of your property values," said resident Howard Rattliff.

The Fort Worth City Council voted Tuesday night, with a "supermajority" of seven members required for approval because of the high level of opposition.
