MESQUITE (CBSDFW.COM) - A 25-year-old man was shot and killed by an officer with the Garland Police Department early Friday morning in Mesquite, after that suspect rammed a squad car following a lengthy chase.
The incident started shortly before 1:00 a.m. when the Garland officer attempted to make a traffic stop on a suspect in a white GMC pickup truck. Police said that the man had been involved in a chase with the Sachse Police Department earlier this week. Those officers lost the suspect, but were able to identify both the vehicle and the driver, later said to be Michael Vincent Allen of Wylie.
When officers in Garland found Allen early Friday morning, he refused to pull over and a chase ensued. A helicopter from the Texas Department of Public Safety got involved, along with deputies from the Dallas County Sheriff's Department. The chase ended about 30 minutes later on Monarch Court in Mesquite, near the intersection of Lawson Road at Cartwright Road, when the suspect got trapped in a cul-de-sac and rammed a Garland police squad car.
The officer, fearing for his life, opened fire and killed the suspect. According to authorities, the Garland officer who was involved in the shooting is a seven-year veteran of the patrol division.
A woman was also in the pickup truck at the time of the chase. She is being questioned by police, but has not been charged with any crimes.
