Funeral For Slain Deputy Draws Miles-Long Procession

EL PASO (CBSDFW.COM/AP) — A miles-long procession of law enforcement vehicles with lights flashing has escorted for burial the casket of a West Texas sheriff's deputy who was shot during a late-night traffic stop.

The service for El Paso County deputy Peter Herrera was held Friday at a Catholic church and the procession then continued onto a cemetery east of the city of El Paso.

Authorities say a driver fired at Herrera 15 times last Friday after the deputy asked the man to exit his car. Herrera was shot multiple times and died Sunday.

The suspect, 27-year-old Facundo Chavez, had multiple warrants for his arrest including for drug possession and domestic violence. He's now charged with capital murder.

Herrera, who was married just five months ago, was the first El Paso County deputy to be shot and killed in almost 80 years.
