Flooding From Pipe Rupture Forces Temporary Closure Of Mesquite Animal Shelter; Animals Are Safe

MESQUITE, Texas (CBDSFW.COM) -  Mesquite Animal Services is expected to reopen Friday after flooding forced it to close its doors Thursday.

A pipe across the street ruptured Thursday morning, sending water inside.

The shelter said all the animals are safe, but there was no public adoption services Thursday.

Staff came in to find animals on their beds or on top of kennels.

Area shelters, including the Plano Animal Shelter, Tri-City Animal Shelter and Prairie Paws Adoption Center, donated their mobile adoption centers for the animals to stay in for now.

"The city has a mutual aid agreement, cooperative agreement, with six other animal shelter agencies in the Dallas area and they really unified together and helped us out today," said Wayne Larson, Communications Director for the City of Mesquite.

It was the first time the multi-city aid agreement has been put into play.  

"It's amazing the power of the animals shelter community and the rescue community," Larson said. 

It's not clear what caused the pipe to rupture.
