Exide Plant In Frisco To Shut Down, Layoff Employees
FRISCO (CBS 11 NEWS) - Exide says it has notified 120 employees at its battery recycling plant in Frisco that they will be laid off on November 30. The company says it's ending its operations at the plant that same day.
The company will retain 27 employees to help with ongoing environmental clean up.
CBS 11 first reported this past May that Exide agreed to close and tear down its facility. In exchange, two City of Frisco economic development boards will pay $45 million to buy the land surrounding the plant.
The facility has been very controversial because it's just one of 16 nationwide that exceed air quality limits for lead, which is dangerous for children.
The City of Frisco has said no taxpayer dollars are being used to buy the land.
Some concerned residents have promised to file a lawsuit claiming the state and federal governments haven't done enough to clean up the battery plant site.
