ERCOT Conducts Rolling Blackouts In South Texas

MCALLEN (CBSDFW.COM/AP) — The operator of the electric grid for most of the state of Texas initiated a series of rolling blackouts in the Lower Rio Grande Valley after problems arose in the area's transmission network.
The Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) instructed transmission and distribution providers in the South Texas border region to cut system demand on an emergency basis after the transmission issues arose because of unplanned power plant outages.
In a statement, ERCOT said it began a rotation of blackouts of 15 to 45 minutes just before 5 p.m. Wednesday until additional electric power could be imported from the power grid across the border in Mexico. The situation was stabilized and ERCOT directed the providers to resume normal electric service about 6:30 p.m.
Just last month, ERCTO officials said they expect to have ample electricity available to keep up with periods of peak demand in the fall and winter.
