Dallas Zoo Welcomes Newborn Rare Kitten
DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) - North Texas is no stranger to adorable baby animals. Just last month, little Belle, the baby elephant we all fell in love with was born at the Ft Worth Zoo. Now, the Dallas Zoo has a darling baby of its own, a rare baby ocelot.
There are only 30 Brazilian ocelots in zoos around the United States. The Dallas zoo now has three. Lindy was born to first time parents, father Joquine and mother Milagre on June 26th. She is only the third ocelot to be born at the Dallas Zoo.
Ocelots are solitary animals so she stays only with mom until she is old enough to go on her own, usually around a year old. Milagre is being a very protective mother, keeping Lindy secluded most of the time. Zoo officials say the best time to catch a peak at Lindy is early in the morning.
Her markings are similar to her father. As for how they picked her name, Lindy means beautiful in several different languages.
This weekend is discount days at the Dallas Zoo, admission is $5 and gates open an hour early at 8am on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
