Dallas Police Shoot, Kill Gunman In Southeast Dallas
DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) -- Dallas Police say they were forced to shoot and kill a man in southeast Dallas Thursday night after the man approached officers with a gun.
The shooting occurred in the Forest area of southeast Dallas around 10:20 p.m. The gunman has been identified as 33-year-old Rodney Hodge.
According to the man's sister, the family was celebrating the man's birthday when he got a phone call from an unknown person.
"All of us were just sitting on my mom's porch, just talking about the old days," says Shantae Johnson, the man's sister. "Then all of a sudden, he got a phone call -- and after that his whole atmosphere just changed tremendously, and I don't know what happened after that."
The sister says her brother hung up the phone, was very distraught, and began saying his goodbyes to his mother and other members of the family.
Police say they received numerous calls about a man walking down the street, firing his weapon in the neighborhood.
Witnesses say that when police arrived, officers ordered the man to drop his weapon. Instead, the man walked towards officers and pointed his weapon at them.
Three officers on scene then shot and killed the suspect.
Dallas Police are talking to a number of witnesses and reviewing police dashcam video. A press conference is scheduled at 9 a.m.
