Dallas Leaders Consider Plastic Bag Ban
DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) - The City of Dallas is going to take a closer look at plastic bags on Wednesday afternoon, as councilmembers decide on whether to ban them in favor of reusable sacks. The issue is detailed in an 87-page report that city leaders are set to examine. The concern is related to how plastic bags litter the environment.
Several other cities across the nation have already enacted such plastic bag bans. Some locations charge a fee for the use of plastic bags, or offer paper bags as a way to encourage residents to bring their own reusable sacks. Washington, D.C. is just one of the locations featured in the report. In the first month of the plastic bag ban, the city saw a drop of about 19 million plastic bags used.
But not everybody in Dallas is on board with the plan to eliminate plastic bags.
The Texas Retailers Association argues that several major retailers already recycle plastic bags, and that reusable sacks can raise the risk of cross-contamination when they hold things like raw meat. Plus, workers in North Texas who make plastic items, including plastic bags, may find their jobs at risk.
The decision is not as simple as either passing or rejecting the ban. The city could perform a year-long study to look at litter in Dallas before making any final decision. Or, the city could opt for one of many variations on the plastic bag ban.
