Dallas BBB Warns Of Zika-Related Scams

DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) - The Dallas Better Business Bureau is alerting consumers about a number of scams popping up in regard to the Zika virus.
In a release posted on-line, the BBB warns about about any product or company "guaranteeing" to protect consumers from the Zika virus. From anti-zika wristbands to ultra sonic pest repellers, the release says scientific studies have shown there isn't any proof that products like that are effective at repelling mosquitoes.
They also warn about natural repellents. The BBB says natural and organic products may sound safer, but unfortunately don't offer much protection against insects. Many of these products contain ingredients not registered with the EPA. Some even claim to offer equal protection to DEET, but aren't scientifically proven.
Another scam to be on the look out for is bogus charities, according to the BBB.
It says to stay wary of phony charities claiming to help victims or to fight the disease. Don't let emotional pleas and pressure to act quickly sway you; if you do wish to donate, do research and seek out the charity yourself.
"We saw the same thing with ebola, with Zika now, do your research, do your homework and don't believe everything you see out there," says Phylissia Landix of the Dallas BBB.
The BBB reminds consumers that the CDC notes the best way to prevent Zika and other diseases spread by mosquitoes is to avoid being bitten. They emphasize that avoiding mosquito bites requires multiple strategies, including:
- Using insect repellent – Look for products that contain the following active ingredients: DEET, Picaridin, IR3535, oil of lemon eucalyptus and Para-menthane-diol.
- Wearing protective clothing – Cover up with long-sleeved shirts and long pants. For extra protection treat clothing with permethrin.
- Mosquito-proofing your home – Use window and door screens, seal your septic system and keep mosquitoes from laying eggs by clearing any standing water.
