City Council To Have Final Vote On Glen Garden Country Club
FORT WORTH (CBSDFW.COM) - The fate of Glen Garden Country Club is still unknown after an emotional fight over a zoning change request, which would allow a whiskey distillery to be built on that land.
A motion to approve the application for re-zoning failed in a 4-4 vote.
Five votes are needed for the motion to pass and now the case will go before the Fort Worth City Council
The commissioners were divided after hearing supporters on both sides of issue.
Supporters of the redevelopment say the distillery would bring a much needed economic boost to East Fort Worth.
Robertson said concerns about the history of the golf course, where golf legends Ben Hogan and Byron Nelson learned to play, are being addressed. Robertson said his company hopes, but cannot guarantee, they would keep 9 holes of the course open and would showcase the course's history and heritage.
The whiskey company told the zoning commission they plan to invest more than $15 million on the existing grounds.
"This is not going to be a honky tonk, this is not going to be a Billy Bob's," said Rev. B.R. Daniels, pastor at First Greater New Hope Baptist Church. "It is a class A business operation whose clientele include our own mayor."
But an overwhelming number of opponents attended the meeting and voiced their concerns.
"I don't want 10,000 people who have been sharing, tasting, drinking, partying, and reveling driving through my neighborhood," said Rev. Carl Porter, who has lived in the neighborhood for decades.
"Like Mr. West, I am equally conflicted on this," said Commissioner Carlos Flores. "I can see arguments for both sides."
While many of the commissioners loved the vision and the idea of the distillery, they were conflicted about the fact that it would sit in the middle of a neighborhood surrounded by schools and churches.
"I welcome a distillery on the East side of Fort Worth, I just don't welcome it in the middle of a neighborhood," said Commissioner Melissa McDougall.
The city council will have the final say at a meeting on July 15.
