DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) -- A teenager was killed Tuesday morning after a vehicle fleeing from Highland Park Police sped through a residential neighborhood, striking another vehicle.
The mother, who was driving, and her teenage son were transported to Baylor Medical Center, according to police. The teenager, identified by the Dallas County Medical Examiner as 13-year-old Ethan Vasquez, was pronounced dead upon arriving; the mother remains in critical condition.
The incident began around 8:15 a.m. when an officer initiated a traffic stop on a minivan in Highland Park. The vehicle, which had been reported stolen in late March, then fled from officers.
Police ended the chase for safety reasons when the suspect vehicle entered a neighborhood driving "erratically."
"Once he got into residential streets in Dallas, the officer recognized that it was too dangerous to continue to follow or pursue the suspect vehicle. He terminated the pursuit," said Highland Park Police Lieutenant Lance Koppa.
But the suspect continued traveling north on Homer Street through the M-Streets in Dallas.
"The suspect vehicle traveling northbound ran the stop sign at Homer and Monticello and collided with another vehicle that was traveling Westbound on Monticello," said Lieutenant Max Geron with Dallas Police.
When witnesses to the crash attempted to assist the victims, the suspect (or suspects) fled on foot. A manhunt is currently underway, though no description of the suspects has been released.
Because the suspects were committing a felony at the time of the crash, the case is being investigated as a Capital Murder offense.
Crime Stoppers are offering a reward of up to $5,000 for information leading to an arrest. Anyone with information is encouraged to call 214.373.TIPS (8477).
Cedar Hill Police confirm that the victims are the wife and son of one of their officers, Sgt. Victor Vasquez.
