DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) - New businesses in Dallas could soon be required to provide parking spaces for bicycles. The Dallas City Council is set to vote on the new rules at a meeting on Wednesday.

Dallas has been investing in biking trails and bike lanes throughout the city, but riders planning to bike to a nearby store might change their minds if there are no places to lock up the bikes once they arrive. "We need to provide some secure bike parking," explained David Cassum, interim director of sustainable development and construction for the City of Dallas.

City administrators want to encourage increased bicycle traffic. "It helps with congestion. It helps with air quality. It helps with even physical health," said Cassum.

The proposal would call for new businesses and shopping centers to provide bike racks for at least two bicycles, in a ratio of 1 bike for every 25 car parking spaces. The new rules would not apply to existing businesses unless they expand. Cassum said that businesses, so far, have not pushed back on the plan.
