A hat can be a wonderful accessory that either makes or breaks an outfit, depending on the style chosen. Hats can make their wearer feel strong and confident, express a feeling or simply be used to hide a bad hair day. Fortunately, in the North Texas area hat shops are abundant and diverse – from cowboy fare to sporty ball caps to upscale designer head wear and vintage one-of-a-kind pieces. Hat prices can vary greatly as well, depending on the style, however, five hat stores listed below are some of the best in the area with a variety that should suit any taste or occasion.

LIDS carries a huge selection of fashion, sport and officially-licensed and branded college and major professional sports team hats in the latest styles and colors. Glen Campbell, the co-founder of parent company Hat World, Inc. believes "Everybody either went to college or follows a college or professional sports team. Likewise, everybody has $20. A hat is clearly an impulse buy, but one that people can afford."

For those searching for a wide variety of unique and unusual hats, Dallas Vintage Shop is the perfect store. It carries hat styles from Derbys, Zoots, Western and Fedoras to Victorian, urban wear and vintage. The store, founded as a thrift shop in 2000, continues to thrive due to the high demand for trendy vintage items and period pieces.


Price: Range from $180 - $240
Hours: Mon to Fri - 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.; Sat and Sun by appointment only.

Cassie MacGregor, dubbed a "hipster designer" by some, has made the hat a fashionable accessory again. MacGregor has been creating unique hats since 2002 and spent time at the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York City to learn the art of hat making. Each hat is handmade by MacGregor, thus, no two are alike, bringing a personal touch to each individual design. Fedoras and cloches run about $180 while cocktail hats are priced at around $220 There is a collection of bridal hats that runs around $240. The House of MacGregor also carries a line of men's fedoras that are priced around $210.

Peters Bros. Hats features Western fare from hat makers including Resistol, Stetson and Peters Bros. in both straw and felt. In addition, the store carries men's fedoras from companies such as Stetson, Dobbs and Scala. A unique offering from the store are hats of the past, including wool top hats and Derbys, and boater hats – also known as a Skimmer, Sailor or Senator. Peters Bros. also offers the official Indiana Jones hat by Dorfman Pacific.

Hours: Tue to Thurs - 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Fri and Sat - 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.

The Best Hat Store is family owned and sits in the historic Stockyards of Fort Worth. The store maintains an inventory of over 4,000 hats, both felt and straw. According to owners Keith and Susan Maddox, they offer the best quality and service in Western hats, with brands such as American Hat Company, Inc. and Resistol.
