Arlington Voters Petition Against Red Light Cameras

ARLINGTON (CBSDFW.COM) - Do you hate those red light cameras? Well, you're not alone. As of today, more than 10,000 voters in Arlington have signed a petition, trying to get the cameras turned off.
Just like David and Goliath or the Buckeyes beating Alabama Thursday night, this has become a true underdog story. A small group of dedicated Arlington residents have fought to collect signatures.
CBS 11 Reporter Mireya Villarreal caught up with the group on a day when the cold, wet weather wasn't letting up. Still, the group of volunteers focused on the silver lining today.
The city says they need 9,651 verified signatures. But their goal was 10,000, just in case.
"I think we're showing them that the city doesn't like these red light cameras. They are not constitutional," Kelly Cannon told us. "t's just a complete waste of time and our money and theirs. And they just need to come down."
The petition they've been pushing will give Arlington voters the opportunity to decide whether to get rid of these cameras or not. The group is trying to get the issue on the May ballot.
"I've seen what happens when government takes control of your streets, takes control of your life. And I don't think that's what government's all about, control. I think it's about helping people," Robert Harris, 10,000th signer, said.
The next few steps include getting the signatures verified and getting Arlington's city council to recognize the initiative and put it on the ballot.
"I'm in agreeance," Katrina Sauls, an Arlington driver, told us. "I just think they're not accurate."
"I have paid a couple of red light tickets. And I think it's time we get rid of it," James Massey, another Arlington driver, added.
So, if today is any indication of what's to come, then this program's days might be numbered.
We did reach out to the City of Arlington, but haven't heard back today. In the past they've said they support keeping these red light cameras because they've successfully reduced accidents and generated millions of dollars in revenue for the city
